The Dereler Tunnel is a feat of water engineering, built when Ürgüp consisted only of houses on the rocky slopes, to bring the valley floor into cultivation and prevent flooding. It is one of the longest examples of the 'water diversion' (stream-channelling) systems seen throughout Cappadocia. As the town grew and farmland was opened to settlement, the tunnel was transformed: reinforced with stone arches to bear the structures above it and, with added side tunnels, evolved into a vast drainage system. 495 metres have been mapped so far, though with its side branches it is known to be much longer; the first 250-metre stretch is being opened to tourism through meticulous work by the Ürgüp Municipality.
